Basler Fasnacht 2019
10 March - 13 March
When the people of Basel say “die drey scheenschde Dääg” [the three most beautiful days] they are referring to the Carnival of Basel, which is the biggest carnival in Switzerland. This carnival starts the Monday after Ash Wednesday at 4am with the Morgenstraich and lasts for exactly 72 hours, thus ending at 4am on Thursday morning with the Endstraich. During this time Basel city centre is overrun with carnival people parading in their groups through the streets, bars and shops. Since December 2017 the Carnival of Basel has officially been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has also been included in the representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
